Shopify Product Description Examples for Clothing

Clothing shoppers can't touch the fabric or try the fit. Good descriptions replace that with facts: fiber content, cut, measurements, and care.

Clothing description rewrites

Illustrative exercises with fictional facts. Replace every detail with your own verified product information.

Relaxed cotton shirt

Supplied facts
100% cotton; relaxed fit; button front; chest pocket; sizes XS to XL; machine wash cold.
Weak
The ultimate shirt for everyone. Premium quality and a perfect fit for every occasion.
Improved
A relaxed-fit, 100% cotton shirt with a button front and chest pocket. Choose from sizes XS to XL, and check the size chart before ordering. Machine wash cold.
Why it helps
Material, construction, sizing, and care replace universal fit and quality claims. A relaxed fit describes the cut; it doesn't promise how every customer will feel in it.
Check before publishing
Match the fiber label, size range, and care instructions. Don't infer shrink resistance or organic certification from a photo.

High-rise straight jeans

Supplied facts
98% cotton, 2% elastane; high rise (11 in); straight leg; 30 in inseam; zip fly; five pockets; model is 5'9" wearing size 27.
Weak
Our best-selling jeans will flatter every body and are the most comfortable you'll ever own.
Improved
High-rise straight-leg jeans in 98% cotton with 2% elastane. The 11-inch rise sits at the natural waist, with a 30-inch inseam, zip fly, and five pockets. Our model is 5'9" and wears size 27.
Why it helps
Rise and inseam measurements answer the question shoppers actually have. Model details give scale without promising how the jeans will look on anyone else.
Check before publishing
Measure rise and inseam on the size you reference. 'Best-selling' needs sales data; leave it out unless you have it.

Merino crewneck sweater

Supplied facts
100% merino wool; regular fit; ribbed cuffs, hem, and neckline; hand wash cold, dry flat.
Weak
Itch-free luxury knit that keeps you warm in any weather.
Improved
A regular-fit crewneck knitted in 100% merino wool, with ribbed cuffs, hem, and neckline. Hand wash cold and dry flat.
Why it helps
Fiber and construction let shoppers judge warmth and feel themselves. 'Itch-free' and 'any weather' are promises the facts don't support.
Check before publishing
Confirm the fiber percentage and care label. Don't claim temperature ratings or skin comfort.

A structure for clothing descriptions

  1. Opening: garment type, fit, and fabric in one sentence.
  2. Highlights: closures, pockets, length, and other construction details.
  3. Size and fit: size range, model info, and a pointer to the size chart.
  4. Care: label instructions, word for word.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Promising fit

'Flattering on everyone' can't be true. Give the cut, measurements, and model info instead.

  • Describing one color as the product

If the product has color variants, don't open with 'this navy shirt.' Describe the item, and let variants carry color.

  • Inventing fabric qualities

Breathable, moisture-wicking, and wrinkle-free are performance claims. Include them only when your supplier specification says so.

Clothing description questions

How long should a clothing product description be?

Long enough to answer fit, fabric, and care. For most garments that's a short opening plus four or five bullet facts.

Should I include the size chart in the description?

Link or point to it. If the chart is an image, also publish the measurements as text so screen reader users and search engines can read them.

Can AI write clothing descriptions from photos?

Photos show visible details like pockets and collars, but not fiber content or measurements. Lumi uses both your product data and up to three images, and leaves out facts it can't support.
