What happens to Shopify content when you uninstall an app?

With Lumi, approved updates are written to Shopify product fields, not shown through a storefront content overlay.

Your published Shopify content stays in Shopify

Lumi publishes approved descriptions, product-image alt text, SEO titles, and SEO descriptions through Shopify product and media APIs. Published updates remain in those Shopify fields after uninstall; uninstall does not restore the previous field values.

Native product fields instead of storefront overlays

A content app can either update Shopify data or place a separate presentation layer over the storefront. Lumi uses Shopify's product and media mutations for supported catalog content.

  • Product descriptions

Approved product-description HTML is written to the Shopify product description field.

  • Product-image alt text

Approved alt text is written to the matching Shopify product media or file record.

  • SEO titles and descriptions

Eligible plans can publish approved SEO titles and SEO descriptions to Shopify's product SEO fields.

  • No accessibility overlay claim

Lumi's catalog-content workflow does not present itself as a storefront accessibility overlay or a replacement for theme and manual accessibility work.

Restore only eligible Lumi publications

Restoration is a separate action in Lumi while the app is installed. It uses a saved previous Shopify value for an eligible publication; generation history is not a backup of every edit made in Shopify.

  • Review a field or generation run

Use the restoration preview for an individual content item or a generation run. Inspect the saved previous and published values, then restore only eligible items. Supported publications include descriptions, SEO fields, and product-image or Files alt text.

  • Check availability and conflicts

Older publications without a saved previous value are unavailable. If Shopify no longer matches the value Lumi published, a newer publication takes precedence, or the target was removed, restoration is blocked. A batch can contain restored, conflicted, unavailable, failed, or pending items; check each result.

  • Verify before removing the app

Confirm restored values in Shopify and resolve any outstanding results before uninstalling. Restoration uses no credits and does not refund generation credits. Republishing restored content requires a new draft. Uninstall itself does not restore anything.

Separate Shopify content from Lumi account data

Published catalog fields and Lumi's internal records have different lifecycles. Merchants should understand both before installing or removing any content app.

  • Published fields remain

Content already applied to Shopify stays in the product or media field until someone changes it in Shopify or through another authorized app.

  • Lumi records are deleted

When Shopify sends the authenticated uninstall webhook, Lumi deletes its stored shop data, including app settings, generation jobs, publication records, brand analysis, scan records, and sessions.

  • Uninstall is not an undo action

Uninstalling does not roll product fields back to earlier wording. Save the current content and records you need, and complete any intended content changes while you still have app access. Do not use uninstall as a restoration step.

  • Exports should be saved first

If your plan provides completed alt-text fix exports or other downloadable records, save anything your team needs before uninstalling.

What to check before authorizing a Shopify content app

Lumi's current Shopify configuration requests product and file read/write access so it can inspect supported catalog content and publish approved updates.

  • Match permissions to the job

Product and file access is required for product descriptions, SEO fields, product-image alt text, and supported file alt text. Lumi does not request theme read/write scopes for this workflow.

  • Confirm the review model

Content batches you start always create drafts for review. Maintain can generate selected new-product content and missing image alt text after product updates. Enabled Maintain automation can publish automatically. Turn it on only for content you want published without prior review.

  • Test with a small group

Start with a limited product selection, check the generated draft and final Shopify field, and confirm the result before processing more products.

  • Know the deletion boundary

Uninstall removes Lumi's stored shop data but does not remove or revert content already published to Shopify fields.

Publishing and uninstall safety questions

Will my published content disappear if I uninstall Lumi?

No. Content already published to supported Shopify product or media fields remains there until it is edited in Shopify or by another authorized app.

Can Lumi restore content before I uninstall?

Lumi can restore eligible publications individually or by generation run when a saved previous Shopify value exists. Publications without a saved value are unavailable, and restoration is blocked if the current Shopify value no longer matches Lumi's published value, a newer publication takes precedence, or the target was removed. Review each result and verify Shopify before uninstalling. Restoration uses no credits, does not refund generation credits, and requires a new draft to republish.

Does uninstall restore my previous product content?

No. Uninstalling Lumi does not roll Shopify fields back to earlier values. Save needed content and exports and complete intended changes before uninstalling. Generation history is a record of work, not a backup of every Shopify edit.

What Lumi data is deleted after uninstall?

Lumi's authenticated uninstall cleanup deletes stored shop data such as settings, sessions, generation jobs, brand analysis, and scan records. Published Shopify field values are separate and remain in Shopify.

Does Lumi use a storefront accessibility overlay?

No. Lumi's supported catalog fixes update Shopify product or media fields. It does not claim to be a storefront accessibility overlay or a complete accessibility solution.

Which Shopify permissions does Lumi use for catalog content?

Lumi's current configuration requests read and write access for products and files. Those scopes support reading product context and publishing approved descriptions, SEO fields, and supported image or file alt text.
