Shopify categories and metafields, filled from your product facts.

Lumi picks the right Shopify category for each product and drafts its standard fields, like Color, Pattern, or Fabric, from your product details and featured image. Fields it can't support with facts stay blank. Every draft waits for your approval before it publishes.

Give every product a category and the details shoppers filter by.

Shopify uses a product's category and its standard fields for storefront filters, Google and Facebook listings, tax rates, reports, and the product data it shares with AI shopping assistants. Filling them by hand means opening each product and picking from long lists. Lumi drafts them in bulk, so you only have to check and approve.

Facts in.Blanks stay blank.

  • The most specific category that fits

Lumi searches Shopify's own category list and picks the most specific match for the product. If no category is a reliable fit, Lumi leaves the category unset instead of guessing.

  • Standard fields drafted together

Once a product has a category, Lumi drafts that category's standard fields in one pass, such as Color, Pattern, Fabric, or measurements. Choices come from Shopify's own list for each field.

  • No guessing

Lumi uses only your product details and what's clearly visible in the featured image. It won't guess materials, dimensions, certifications, compatibility, or audience. When the facts aren't there, the field stays blank.

  • Your existing data stays put

Categories and fields you've already filled are kept unless you choose to rewrite them. Lumi also checks nothing changed in Shopify before it publishes, so it won't overwrite a fresh edit.

From empty fields to approved details.

Install Lumi free
  1. Connect your Shopify store

Install Lumi from the Shopify App Store and approve its Shopify permissions. Lumi writes to Shopify's own category and product fields, with no theme code or scripts.

  2. Choose products and Category & metafields

Select a batch of products, then choose Category & metafields as the content to create. Lumi shows the credit estimate before you start.

  3. Lumi drafts the category and fields

Lumi picks a category for products that don't have one, then drafts the empty standard fields for that category from your product facts.

  4. Review, edit, and publish

Compare current and proposed values, fix any value, and approve what's right. Publish the category first, then its fields. If a standard field isn't set up in your store yet, Lumi turns it on when you publish.

  5. Keep new products covered

On Maintain, you can add Category & metafields to automation for new products. It always creates drafts for you to approve.

How Lumi drafts categories and fields

What Lumi reads, what it fills, and where it stops.

Facts it uses
Product title, description, product type, vendor, options, existing product fields, and the featured image.
What it fills
The product category from Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy, plus that category's standard fields (Shopify's category metafields). Custom metafields are not filled.
Field types
Choice lists like Color or Pattern, measurements like dimensions, weight, and volume, text, numbers, and yes/no fields. Fields of other types are skipped for you to fill in Shopify.
Existing data
Kept by default. Choose Also rewrite existing content to have Lumi suggest a new category or redraft filled fields.
Review
Each draft shows the current value next to the proposed one. Approve, reject, or edit a field's value, then publish. Drafts never publish automatically, including drafts from Maintain automation.
Credits
One credit per product for its category and field drafts, on every plan including Free.
Where Shopify uses it
Storefront filters through the Search & Discovery app, Google and Facebook listings, tax rates at checkout, Shopify reports, and the product data Shopify Catalog shares with AI assistants like ChatGPT and Copilot.

Accurate fields, or no field.

Category fields are facts about your product. Lumi drafts only what it can support and leaves the final call to you.

Compare plans
  • Category and field drafts always wait for your approval, even from Maintain automation set to publish automatically.
  • Lumi fills Shopify's standard category fields, not custom metafields.
  • Some field types aren't supported yet. Fill those in Shopify admin.
  • Existing categories and filled fields are kept unless you choose to rewrite them.
  • Category & metafields isn't added to Maintain automation unless you select it.
  • Lumi fills the fields in Shopify. Which channels and AI assistants receive them depends on your Shopify sales channel settings, and none of them guarantee placement.
  • Example values on this page are illustrative. Field names and choices depend on each Shopify category.

Answers about drafts, review, and publishing.

Does this help my products show up in ChatGPT, Gemini, and other AI assistants?

It gives them better facts to work with. Shopify Catalog shares your products with AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, and the Google & YouTube channel supplies Google's AI Mode and Gemini. Shopify recommends complete, well-structured product information so AI agents can describe products accurately, and AI shopping feeds such as OpenAI's include fields for product category, color, material, age group, and gender. A filled-in category and standard fields make those facts explicit instead of leaving them buried in a description. No app controls what an AI assistant recommends, so Lumi can't promise placement or more mentions.

What else does Shopify use categories and their fields for?

Shopify says categories help it apply the most accurate tax rate at checkout and make it easier to sell on channels that need a standard product type, such as Google and Facebook. Category fields can become storefront filters through the Search & Discovery app, and they show up as filters and dimensions in Shopify reports. Because the category can affect tax, check each category draft before you publish it.

Can I review categories and fields before they publish?

Yes, always. Category and field drafts wait for your approval, even when Maintain automation creates them and even if your other automated content is set to publish automatically. Approve, reject, or edit each draft, then publish the ones you approve.

What are Shopify category metafields?

When you give a product a category from Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy, Shopify offers a set of standard fields for that category, such as Color, Pattern, or Fabric for clothing. Shopify calls these category metafields. They describe the product in a structured way that Shopify and your theme can reuse, for example as storefront filters.

Will Lumi guess details it can't see?

It shouldn't. Lumi only fills a field from facts in your product details or details clearly visible in the featured image. It is told never to guess materials, dimensions, certifications, compatibility, or who the product is for, and to leave a field blank when the facts aren't there. Tags and the category name don't count as facts. Check every draft before you publish it.

Does it change categories I've already set?

No. Lumi keeps your existing category and any field that already has a value. It only fills what's empty. If you want Lumi to suggest a new category or redraft filled fields, choose Also rewrite existing content for those products.

What does it cost?

One credit per product, however many fields Lumi drafts for it. Products whose category and supported fields are already filled are skipped. Regenerating uses another credit. Free includes 100 credits a month. Maintain is $19 a month for 500 credits, and One-Time Cleanup is $79 once for 3,000 credits.

Does Lumi fill my custom metafields?

No. Lumi drafts the product category and Shopify's standard fields for that category. It does not fill custom metafields you or another app created.

Why did Lumi skip some fields?

A field is skipped when the product details don't support a value, when the value Lumi suggested isn't a valid choice for that field, or when Lumi doesn't support that type of field yet. Skipped fields keep their current value, so you can complete them in Shopify admin. Adding clearer facts to your product details helps the next draft.

Can I undo a published category or field?

Yes. Published category and field changes can be restored from Lumi. Restore a product's field changes before restoring its category.

Why is Lumi asking for new Shopify permissions?

Setting categories and their fields needs permission to edit products and the entries Shopify uses for choices like Color. If your store installed Lumi before this feature, Lumi asks you to approve those permissions before you can use it.

Will this improve my search rankings?

Lumi can't promise that. Accurate categories and fields give Shopify, search engines, and shopping channels clearer product information, but rankings and traffic depend on many factors.

Fill in what Shopify asks for. Approve what's right.
