Shopify category metafields: what they are and how to fill them

A product category places each product in Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy. Category metafields are the standard attributes that come with that category, such as color, size, material, or neckline.

What are Shopify category metafields?

Category metafields are standard product fields that Shopify attaches to a product category. Shopify calls them product attributes in its taxonomy. Choose a category such as Shirts and Shopify offers fields like size, neckline, and sleeve length type, with preset values you can use as they are or customize.

Example categories and their fields

Each category brings its own fields. These are a selection of the standard fields for each category in Shopify's taxonomy, checked November 3, 2026.

What a category and its fields do

Shopify uses the same structured data in several places.

  • Storefront filters

Search & Discovery filters can use category metafields, so shoppers can narrow a collection by color, size, or material.

  • Tax and reports

Shopify uses the product category to calculate tax rates in the United States, and category metafields can be dimensions in analytics reports, such as sales by material.

  • Variant options and swatches

You can connect category metafields to variant options, then show color options as swatches on product pages.

  • Sales channels and AI shopping

Google, Facebook, and the Shopify Catalog that feeds AI shopping assistants such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot read structured product facts. Complete fields give them better facts; no field guarantees placement.

How to set a category and its fields on one product

Shopify admin → Products → choose a product.

  • 1. Choose the most specific category

In the Category field, search for the narrowest category that fits, such as Shirts rather than Clothing. Shopify may suggest one; check it against the product.

  • 2. Review the suggested fields

Shopify adds some category metafields by default and suggests others. Add the ones you can fill accurately.

  • 3. Fill values from verified facts

Pick preset values where they fit. Leave a field blank rather than guessing material or fit from a photo.

  • 4. Save and check the storefront

If filters or swatches use the field, check that the product appears under the right filter value.

Four ways to fill categories and fields in bulk

Pick by catalog size and how much you trust your source data.

  • Shopify bulk editing

Select products of the same kind in admin and bulk edit their category. Fast for groups like 'all t-shirts', but you still fill each product's fields yourself.

  • CSV import

Shopify's product CSV has a Product category column that takes a Standard Product Taxonomy value. Good when a supplier feed already has categories. Export a backup first and test a few rows.

  • Bulk data apps

Spreadsheet-style import apps can write categories and metafields together. Fast when your facts already live in a spreadsheet, but they write exactly what you give them.

  • AI drafting apps

Apps such as Lumi or Metafill suggest a category and field values from product details and images. Review every suggestion: a photo can show color, but rarely material or size.

How Lumi fills categories and category fields

One credit per product, and every draft waits for your approval.

  • Category and fields as one draft

Lumi picks a category from Shopify's taxonomy and drafts its standard fields from your product details and featured image, for one credit per product.

  • Blanks instead of guesses

Fields your product details don't support are left blank and listed so you can fill them later.

  • Approval every time

Category drafts never publish automatically, even when other Maintain automation is set to publish. Existing categories and filled values are kept unless you choose to rewrite them.

Product data questions

What's the difference between a product category and a product type?

The product category comes from Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy and drives tax, category metafields, and sales channel mapping. Product type is your own free-text label for organizing products, such as 'Cooling sheets'.

Are category metafields the same as custom metafields?

No. Category metafields are standard fields Shopify defines for each category. Custom metafields are fields you or an app define for your own data.

Do category metafields help SEO?

Not directly in Google rankings. They feed filters, sales channels, and product feeds, which can make products easier to find. Shopify doesn't say they raise rankings or AI recommendations.

Can I fill category metafields in bulk?

Categories, yes: Shopify's bulk editor and the product CSV both set them. For field values, use a data-import app when the facts are already in a spreadsheet, or an AI drafting app that suggests values for you to review.
