How to bulk edit alt text and SEO fields in Shopify
Editing one product at a time works for a handful of products. For hundreds, choose a method by what you already have: finished text in a spreadsheet, or empty fields that still need writing.
Can you bulk edit alt text and SEO fields in Shopify?
Yes. Shopify's product CSV has columns for Image alt text, SEO title, and SEO description, so you can export, edit in a spreadsheet, and import. That updates many products at once, but you still have to write every value. Apps can draft the text for you to review.
Four ways compared
Limits are from Shopify's help center, checked November 3, 2026.
| Method | Best for | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Product page in Shopify admin | A few products, or fixing single mistakes | One image and one product at a time |
| Shopify bulk editor | Quick edits to product fields across a filtered list | Image alt text isn't edited here; check which columns your admin offers |
| CSV export and import | Hundreds of products when you already have the text | You write every value yourself; test overwrite behavior on a few rows first |
| An app that drafts content | Empty or weak fields that still need writing | Read each draft before it publishes; check credits or per-image costs |
Bulk edit with a product CSV
The most direct built-in route for large catalogs.
1. Export the products you want to change
Products → Export. Keep an untouched copy as your backup.
2. Fill the columns
Image alt text (up to 512 characters; Shopify recommends 125 or fewer), SEO title (up to 70 characters), and SEO description (up to 320). A blank SEO title falls back to the product title; a blank SEO description falls back to the product description.
3. Import a test file first
Import five rows with Overwrite products with matching handles selected, then check those products in admin and on the storefront.
4. Import the rest
Import the full file and spot-check products from different collections.
What to write at scale
The slow part is the writing, not the importing.
Alt text
Describe what each image shows: product type, color, and the visible detail that matters. Don't copy the product title into every image.
SEO titles
Product name plus type and one distinguishing detail, about 60 characters.
Meta descriptions
One or two sentences with verified facts, about 150 to 160 characters. Avoid one template repeated across every product.
When an app saves time
Useful when fields are empty or weak, not just in the wrong place.
Find the gaps first
Lumi counts missing and weak alt text, SEO titles, SEO descriptions, and descriptions across your catalog.
Draft, then review
Batches you start create drafts. Compare old and new, edit, and publish only what's ready.
Keep a record
Published changes are listed with previous values, can be exported as a CSV, and eligible changes can be restored.
Catalog cleanup questions
Can I add alt text to all product images at once in Shopify?
Not in the admin itself. Use a product CSV (the Image alt text column) or an app. Each image row in the CSV has its own alt text value.
What happens if I leave the SEO title blank?
Shopify uses the product title as the search listing title. A blank SEO description falls back to the product description.
Will a CSV import overwrite my other product data?
It can, when you choose to overwrite products with matching handles. Keep your backup export and test on a few products first.
Skip writing hundreds of fields by hand
Lumi drafts alt text, SEO titles, and meta descriptions for the products you pick. You review before anything publishes.
