Shopify Catalog Cleanup Checklist: Your First Batch

7 min read

Finish one useful cleanup batch before tackling the whole catalog. This checklist helps you choose that batch, resolve uncertain facts, and verify the changes after publication.

Use this as a working sequence for a growing Shopify store. It complements our article on keeping content quality steady as your catalog grows: that article explains the backlog, while this checklist defines what to do in your next review session.

1. Choose a first batch you can finish

  • Pick a small group, such as five products from one collection, whose source facts are available.
  • Prioritize active products with missing buying information, upcoming launch needs, or recurring customer questions.
  • Use your own traffic or sales data if available. If it is missing, record the operational reason for choosing the group.
  • Keep products with unresolved safety, ingredient, or compatibility facts out of the publishing queue until someone confirms them.
  • Assign one reviewer and a clear finish condition: the selected fields are checked in Shopify after publication.

A five-product apparel collection with current supplier specifications is a workable first batch. “Improve every product” is not a finish condition. If one item needs an unanswered material question, move that item to a follow-up list and finish the others.

2. Separate missing fields from quality problems

Record the product URL, field, observed issue, source to check, and next action. A missing field needs content; a populated field may need correction, clearer wording, or no change at all. Treat those as separate review decisions.

  • Missing: a product has no usable description, or an informative product image has no useful alt text.
  • Quality: a description is generic, a specification is outdated, or an image’s alt text describes the wrong variant.
  • Public-output question: a sampled page has a weak title or repeated metadata, but the saved Shopify SEO field has not yet been inspected.

An empty alt attribute can be appropriate for a decorative image. A short description can be sufficient for a simple item. A scanner finding is a prompt to inspect context, not an instruction to overwrite every flagged value.

3. Use the free sample as a starting list

Run a free storefront sample scan if you need a starting point. The report checks reachable public product pages for image alt text, description content, public title and meta-description signals, and selected repetition patterns. Its coverage is bounded, and it cannot read Shopify’s internal SEO fields.

Open a flagged product URL and compare the finding with Shopify admin. A public title can be present even when you have not set a custom SEO title. A description found in structured data may not be visible in the storefront layout. Confirm the issue and its location before adding it to your batch.

Install Lumi when you want to work with connected product data and prepare supported drafts. Select the matching products and fields in the app; the public sample is not an automatic import or a complete inventory. Unscanned products still need a separate review.

4. Confirm source facts before drafting

  • Match the exact product and variant to its supplier sheet, approved label, measurements, or other reliable record.
  • Check material, size, care, package contents, ingredients, and compatibility where relevant.
  • Resolve contradictory records and remove unsupported claims from the drafting context.
  • Save a copy of current wording your team needs to retain, and record who approved the facts.

Do not treat an image or an existing AI draft as proof of a certification, performance rating, or ingredient. Mark unknown facts for follow-up. Draft only the fields you can support.

5. Generate selected fields and review every draft

Start with manual review enabled. Product descriptions and product-image alt-text drafts are available on every Lumi plan; SEO drafts require an eligible paid plan. Confirm the selected content types, product count, batch limit, and credit estimate before generating.

  • Compare each description against its source facts and the product options.
  • Check alt text against the exact image, including meaningful color or view differences.
  • Read title and meta-description pairs together; remove repeated filler and unsupported offers.
  • Edit questionable wording or leave the draft unpublished until the facts are resolved.

Use the description examples and search-listing examples as review exercises. They illustrate editorial decisions and do not supply facts for your own products.

6. Publish, then verify the matching Shopify fields

Publish only approved updates. Read the outcome for each selected item and separate successful publications from failed or pending work. A completed generation is not evidence that every draft was published.

  • Reopen each product in Shopify and compare the saved description or search-listing field with the approved copy.
  • For alt text, open the matching image or file and check the saved text.
  • Inspect the storefront on mobile for description formatting and the intended product context.
  • For search fields, check the public title and meta-description output. Google may display different text later.
  • Record the checked URLs, fields, reviewer, date, and exceptions before expanding the batch.

The first-batch review walkthrough connects these checks to Lumi’s drafting and publishing steps. Read publishing and uninstall safety before removing the app: uninstalling does not revert published Shopify content.

7. Set a recurring maintenance routine

Review new and changed products after launches, supplier revisions, and image replacements. A weekly check of recent additions is a practical starting schedule; adjust it to your actual publishing pace. Keep an owner and a follow-up date for unresolved facts.

Measure completed work as reviewed and verified fields, alongside the remaining backlog. Keep sampled scan findings separate from connected-catalog counts. Search impressions, clicks, and installs are separate outcomes that require their own measurement; a finished cleanup batch does not establish a ranking or revenue result.
