ChatGPT Prompts for Shopify Product Content

ChatGPT can write a solid first draft of Shopify product content, as long as you give it real facts and tell it what not to do. These prompts cover the four fields most catalogs leave empty: product descriptions, image alt text, SEO titles, and meta descriptions.
Each prompt assumes you paste in a short fact sheet. Without one, any AI writer fills gaps with plausible guesses, and guesses about materials, sizes, or certifications become customer-service problems.
Start with a product fact sheet
Collect the facts once and reuse them in every prompt. Leave a line blank rather than guessing.
Product name: Harbor Linen Shirt Product type: Men's button-up shirt Materials: 100% linen Fit: Relaxed Variants: Sand, Navy, Olive; sizes S–XXL Key details: Chest pocket, curved hem, corozo buttons Care: Machine wash cold, line dry Not confirmed: Country of manufacture, certifications
The "not confirmed" line matters. It tells the model which claims to leave out instead of inventing them.
Prompt: product description
Write a Shopify product description using only the facts below. - Open with one short paragraph (under 40 words) saying what the product is and its strongest supported detail. - Then add 3–5 bullet points formatted as "Label: fact", most important first. - Add a short "Care" section only if care facts are given. - Do not invent materials, measurements, certifications, warranties, or health claims. - Do not mention anything listed under "Not confirmed". - No closing call to action. Plain, specific language; no "premium" or "elevate". - Return simple HTML using only <p>, <ul>, <li>, <h3>, and <strong>. [paste fact sheet]
Asking for HTML with a short tag list makes the result paste cleanly into Shopify's description editor in code view. For annotated examples by product type, see the Shopify product description examples.
Prompt: image alt text
Alt text should describe the photo, not the product listing. Upload the image itself, or the model will fall back to repeating the title.
Write alt text for the attached product photo. - Describe what is visible that matters to a shopper: item, color, material, notable details, angle or context. - Use the fact sheet only to name things correctly, not to add details you can't see. - One phrase or sentence, ideally under 125 characters. - Do not start with "Image of" or "Photo of". No keywords lists, no promotions. - If the photo is purely decorative, reply "DECORATIVE" instead. [attach image] [paste fact sheet]
The "DECORATIVE" escape hatch matters: decorative images should get an empty alt value, not a forced description. The alt text by image type guide explains lifestyle shots, swatches, and size charts.
Prompt: SEO title and meta description
Write a Shopify SEO title and meta description for this product page. - SEO title: under 60 characters, product type and the most distinguishing detail first. Do not add the store name. - Meta description: under 155 characters, a plain summary of what the page offers, using only the facts below. - Give 3 options for each, then mark the one you recommend. - No prices, discounts, or stock claims (they go stale). [paste fact sheet]
Check lengths before publishing. Google may shorten or rewrite either field. The free SEO title and meta description checker shows character counts and a search-result preview, and the SEO title and meta description examples show six edited pairs.
Review every draft before it goes live
- Does every claim appear in the fact sheet or the photo?
- Did anything from "not confirmed" slip in?
- Does the description describe one variant as if it were the whole product?
- Does alt text describe this specific image, or just repeat the title?
- Are SEO titles distinct across similar products?
Pasting drafts vs. a connected store
A chat with pasted facts can't see your store: you copy each approved draft into Shopify yourself and track what changed. Shopify also documents connecting AI tools to a store. If you connect one, check which store actions it can take, what permissions you grant, and how you review changes before they publish.
When prompts stop scaling
Prompts work well for a handful of products. At hundreds, the hard part isn't writing: it's finding which fields are empty, matching each photo to the right image record, reviewing in batches, and keeping a record of what was published. That's the job Lumi is built for. It drafts from your Shopify data and photos, follows similar rules about unsupported claims, and waits for your approval before publishing. The Lumi vs ChatGPT comparison covers the trade-offs, and Shopify Magic vs ChatGPT compares the built-in option.
ChatGPT for Shopify questions
Can I use ChatGPT for Shopify alt text?
Yes, if you upload each image. A prompt with only the product title produces generic text. Review each result against the photo and the image's purpose on the page.
Will AI-written product descriptions hurt SEO?
Google's guidance focuses on whether content is helpful, not how it was produced. Specific, accurate descriptions written from real product facts are the goal; thin or duplicated copy is the risk, however it was written.
Should I paste supplier descriptions into ChatGPT to rewrite?
You can use them as a source of facts, but ask for fresh wording. Supplier copy is often shared across many stores.
