Shopify Product Description Examples: 6 Annotated Rewrites

A useful product description helps someone decide whether an item fits their needs. Start with evidence, then choose the details that make the decision easier.

These six examples are illustrative editorial exercises, not customer results or actual Lumi outputs. The supplied facts are fictional inputs for each exercise. Use the structure with your own verified product information; do not copy the example specifications into a real listing.

Build a short fact sheet before writing

Collect the exact product name, material or ingredients, dimensions, variants, care instructions, compatibility, and package contents where relevant. Give each fact a source, such as a supplier specification, approved label, or measured product record. If two sources disagree, resolve that disagreement before drafting.

A photo can show a pocket or a clasp. It cannot prove a fiber percentage, certification, ingredient, or performance rating. Leave an unknown out of the published copy and add it to a question list for the person who owns the product information.

For each revision below, notice what became more specific and what was removed. A short paragraph can be useful without an adjective in every sentence.

1. Apparel: explain fit with facts

Illustrative product: Relaxed cotton shirt.

Supplied facts: 100% cotton; relaxed fit; button front; chest pocket; sizes XS to XL; machine wash cold.

Weak copy: The ultimate shirt for everyone. Premium quality and a perfect fit for every occasion.

Improved copy: A relaxed-fit, 100% cotton shirt with a button front and chest pocket. Choose from sizes XS to XL, and check the size chart before ordering. Machine wash cold.

Why it helps: The revision replaces universal fit and quality claims with material, construction, sizing, and care. A relaxed fit describes the cut; it does not establish how every customer will feel wearing it.

Accuracy checklist: Match the fiber label, actual size range, fit terminology, and care instructions. Do not infer shrink resistance or organic certification from a photo.

2. Jewelry: name the material precisely

Illustrative product: Silver pendant necklace.

Supplied facts: 925 sterling silver pendant and chain; 16-inch chain with a 2-inch extender; spring-ring clasp; no gemstone.

Weak copy: A luxurious, hypoallergenic necklace that never tarnishes and lasts forever.

Improved copy: This 925 sterling silver pendant necklace comes on a 16-inch chain with a 2-inch extender and a spring-ring clasp. The simple pendant has no gemstone, keeping the focus on its silver form.

Why it helps: Material and chain measurements help a shopper compare pieces. Sterling silver does not, by itself, substantiate an allergy guarantee or a promise that the finish will never change.

Accuracy checklist: Confirm whether every named component is sterling silver, verify chain measurements, and remove unsupported allergy, sourcing, and tarnish claims.

3. Home goods: make dimensions and care useful

Illustrative product: Stoneware serving bowl.

Supplied facts: Glazed stoneware; 24 cm diameter; 8 cm high; dishwasher safe; not for oven use; one bowl per order.

Weak copy: The perfect bowl for all your cooking needs. Beautiful, indestructible, and made for every kitchen.

Improved copy: Serve at the table with a glazed stoneware bowl measuring 24 cm across and 8 cm high. Each order includes one bowl. It is dishwasher safe and is not intended for oven use.

Why it helps: The copy answers size, quantity, and care questions while retaining a meaningful restriction. It does not turn a serving bowl into oven-safe cookware or invent a capacity from its exterior dimensions.

Accuracy checklist: Check measurements, package quantity, and the supplier care sheet. Do not infer microwave safety, lead-free testing, or capacity.

4. Beauty: describe the product without invented outcomes

Illustrative product: Fragrance-free body lotion.

Supplied facts: 250 mL pump bottle; fragrance-free formula; contains glycerin and shea butter; body lotion; full ingredient list supplied separately.

Weak copy: Erase wrinkles overnight with this dermatologist-approved lotion, safe for every skin type.

Improved copy: A fragrance-free body lotion in a 250 mL pump bottle, formulated with glycerin and shea butter. Review the full ingredient list before choosing it for your routine.

Why it helps: The revision identifies format, quantity, and supplied formulation details. It avoids turning familiar ingredients into an unverified treatment claim or implying testing that was never supplied.

Accuracy checklist: Verify the current ingredient list, volume, and fragrance-free claim. Do not add treatment results, approval claims, or universal suitability without substantiation.

5. Food: keep ingredients and limits visible

Illustrative product: Dark chocolate bar.

Supplied facts: 80 g bar; 70% cocoa; ingredients: cocoa mass, sugar, cocoa butter; label states may contain milk and nuts.

Weak copy: Guilt-free chocolate that is healthy, allergy-safe, and guaranteed to boost your mood.

Improved copy: An 80 g dark chocolate bar with 70% cocoa. Made with cocoa mass, sugar, and cocoa butter. The label states that it may contain milk and nuts; check the pack information before ordering.

Why it helps: Cocoa percentage and pack size explain the item without making a health promise. The precautionary label statement is retained instead of being replaced with an unsupported free-from claim.

Accuracy checklist: Compare ingredients and precautionary statements with the current label. Confirm weight and cocoa percentage. Do not infer vegan status, nutritional benefits, or allergen absence.

6. Electronics: distinguish a connector from a capability

Illustrative product: USB-C charging cable.

Supplied facts: 1 m cable; USB-C connectors at both ends; rated up to 60 W with compatible equipment; USB 2.0 data; charger not included.

Weak copy: Charge any device instantly with the fastest cable ever. Everything you need is included.

Improved copy: Connect compatible USB-C equipment with a 1 m USB-C to USB-C cable. It supports charging up to 60 W with compatible equipment and USB 2.0 data transfer. A charger is not included.

Why it helps: Connector type, length, and supplied limits replace a universal compatibility promise. The maximum rating depends on the connected equipment, and the package contents remain explicit.

Accuracy checklist: Verify the power rating and data standard against the specification sheet. Do not infer video support, charging speed for a particular phone, or included accessories.

Use a repeatable description structure

  1. Open with what the product is and one verified distinguishing detail.
  2. Add the specifications that answer the most likely buying questions.
  3. State care, compatibility, or usage limits close to the relevant feature.
  4. Check that the copy describes the exact product and variants on the page.

Read the result alongside the images and product options. If a sentence could describe nearly every item in the collection, replace it with a useful fact or remove it. Keep established brand language where it adds meaning, and avoid giving every product the same opening.

Shopify recommends natural wording when incorporating search terms. See its keyword guidance and our product-description SEO tips for the search context behind the copy.

Review one small group before scaling

Choose products whose facts you can verify today. With Lumi, product-description generation creates drafts for review in every batch you start. Check every specification, edit the wording, and publish only the approved fields. Growth and Scale can separately enable automatic publishing for selected new-product content and missing image alt text after product updates. That setting does not change a batch you start.

The product-description generator explains that workflow. Follow the first-batch walkthrough to verify the resulting Shopify fields, and use the title and meta-description examples when the product copy is ready.
