Shopify accessibility and catalog cleanup scan
Make Shopify accessibility work easier to act on
Missing image descriptions can leave shoppers without useful product context. Start by separating catalog content you can improve from theme and interaction issues that need hands-on testing.
Lumi supports that content work with reviewable alt text drafts and approved updates saved directly to supported Shopify fields.
- Free catalog gap report
- Sample of public Shopify storefront pages
- Prioritized cleanup list, not a vague score

Audit breakdown
What the sample scan can inspect
The free report checks a limited sample of reachable public pages. It groups image findings, missing meta descriptions, and heading signals. Metadata findings support catalog cleanup; they are not proof of an accessibility failure.
Image alt text
The report surfaces missing or weak image alt text across sampled storefront pages.
- Missing, generic, or duplicated alt text
- Product media that lacks enough descriptive context
- Catalog issues that compound as SKUs grow
Meta descriptions and page structure
Missing meta descriptions and heading signals are grouped separately from image findings.
- Missing meta descriptions on checked pages
- Pages with multiple H1 headings
- Automated signals that still need merchant review
Cleanup records
Progress is easier to share when report findings are grouped into a clear cleanup plan.
- Clear issue groups instead of one unexplained score
- A baseline snapshot to support internal reporting
- A clear handoff from automated findings to manual review and cleanup work
Automation boundaries
What a scan cannot decide
An alt attribute can be present and still describe the wrong image. Empty alt text can be appropriate for decoration. A person needs to assess the image in its page context.
Test keyboard navigation, focus, forms, menus, media, and checkout with appropriate assistive technology. Automated scans cannot determine full accessibility or legal compliance. Use our WCAG review guide to plan the broader work.
For one URL, use the single-page missing-alt checker. It counts absent alt attributes in returned HTML and does not judge whether existing descriptions are useful.
Remediation plan
A practical remediation workflow
Assign content and theme work separately so each finding reaches someone who can address it.
Run the scan
Generate a sample storefront report so your team can see what needs attention before making changes.
Sort what to do now and later
Separate what to review now, what to queue next, and what to document so the backlog stays readable.
Fix, publish, and check again
Use Lumi to update selected products, then run another report as your store changes.
How Lumi fits
Improve the supported catalog fields
In the installed app, select product images, draft from image and product context, and check wording against the actual image. Batches you start always wait for review and publication. Growth and Scale can separately enable automatic publishing for new-product content and missing image alt text after product updates.
Use the alt text examples library to guide edits. Approve accurate drafts and publish them to the matching Shopify image fields. Theme code, keyboard behavior, and checkout require separate work.

Documentation
Keep a useful record of the work
Save a baseline report and record who owns each follow-up. Generation history summarizes drafts, publications, and failures. Completed alt-text fixes have a dedicated record, with CSV export on eligible paid plans.
These records help a team review completed work; they do not certify compliance. Restoration is available only for eligible publications with saved previous values when Shopify still matches Lumi’s published value. History is not a backup of every Shopify edit.
FAQ
Shopify accessibility scan FAQ
Straight answers to the questions Shopify merchants ask before they run their first scan.
Is this scan a complete accessibility review?
No. The scan helps identify automated findings on sampled storefront pages and keeps manual-review needs visible. It cannot assess every accessibility requirement or certify compliance.
Will an accessibility overlay fix Shopify product alt text?
Provider behavior varies. Ask whether changes are saved in Shopify or applied only while a storefront script runs. Lumi saves approved updates to supported Shopify catalog fields.
How are the report findings organized?
The free report groups sampled findings into image alt text, missing meta descriptions, page structure, and next steps. Installed-app accessibility reports add priorities, affected pages, technical evidence, owners, and manual-review items.
Is Lumi a complete accessibility solution?
No. Lumi supports automated checks, manual-review workflows, reviewable product-image alt-text fixes, and developer briefs for theme work. Manual testing and qualified guidance may still be needed.
What does the free report scan?
The report checks a sample of public Shopify storefront pages for missing or weak image alt text, missing meta descriptions, and basic page structure. It does not scan the entire catalog or replace manual review.

Important legal notice
Lumi supports WCAG-informed review workflows for Shopify product content and sampled storefront pages. It does not guarantee compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), WCAG, the European Accessibility Act (EAA), or any other legal or accessibility requirement. Your team should review automated findings and suggested content and, when appropriate, consult qualified accessibility or legal professionals. Scan reports and completed alt-text fix records can document parts of ongoing cleanup, but they are not legal advice.
